The Botanical Garden of the University of Bologna was founded in 1568 by Ulisse Aldrovandi. It was transferred several times from place to place, and finally came to occupy its present site in 1804.
It covers a surface area of about two hectares, and hosts over 5000 local and exotic plants. It includes three glasshouses, two of which contain tropical plants (mainly ferns, orchids and bromeliads), while the third hosts a large collection of succulent plants.
Other sections include: medicinal plants, ornamentals, a woodland community, and reconstructions of natural habitats. Trained personnel (former school teachers) is available on request for guided tours both for visitors and classes of school children.
