Research in progress :
- 1) Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their role in tumour diffusion. The expression and the activity of MMPs in cancer cell lines (glioblastoma, fibrosarcoma, colon carcinoma, etc.) are evaluated in basal conditions and in the presence of antitumoral compounds, such as retinoids. The correlation between the increase in MMPs and cyclooxygenase-2, the key enzyme in eicosanoid biosynthesis, is also studied.
- 2) Multi-drug resistance (MDR). In tumour cell lines, in which resistance to doxorubicin is associated to resistance to the retinoids presently in clinical use (all trans retinoic acid and 9-cis retinoic acid), the effect of newly synthesised retinoids is tested, in order to evaluate their antitumoral effect and to check if their action is accompanied by modifications of some markers of MDR, e.g., MRP and EMMPRIN proteins.
