Research in progress :
- By using direct and reverse genetics approaches, the research carried out in my lab are mainly focused on the analysis of Drosophila development and the use of Drosophila as model system to study the function of heterologous genes expressed during Drosophila development. The ongoing projects are: - analysis of signaling pathways involved in the progression of the oogenetic processes that lead to the production of a mature eggs. - analysis of molecular mechanisms in germ cell establishment in Drosophila - use of Drosophila as model system to perform a functional analysis of human disease genes expressed in Drosophila transgenic lines. - use of Drosophila as model system to study the interactions between parasitoids and their hosts by expressing parasitoids transgenic genes during Drosophila development. This analysis will be relevant to develop biotechnology-derived natural products for pest control.
Funding :
- The work has been financed from MIUR, and presently he has been in charge of a project based on the use of Drosophila as model system to study the interaction between host-parasitoid in the insect. By collaborating with Prof. Paul Lasko, Chiarman of the Department of Biology and Developmental Biology, McGill University, Montreal, Québec, Canada, in the 2007 Prof. Gargiulo obtained a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreing Affairs for the project: “Molecular mechanisms in germ cell establishment and diseases” nell'ambito dei Progetti di Ricerca di Grande Rilevanza (legge 401/1990) approvati nei protocolli di Cooperazione Scientifica e Tecnologica Bilaterale Italia-Quebec (2007-2009).
- PRIN 2004-2006 (MIUR) "Nuove strategie di controllo degli insetti con geni di antagonisti naturali".
