Research in progress :
- Running Water Ecology. The several major research topics are:
- 1) Structure and functioning of the macroinvertebrate community
- 2) Functional evaluations in the monitoring of the river ecosystem processes
- 3) Effect of regulated rivers on the downstream benthos communities
- 4) Breakdown and colonization of leaf litter
- 5) Biodiversity of vegetation and invertebrate on Riparian zone
- 6) Qualitative effects of runoff in drainage systems
- 7) Evaluation of minimum discharge flow
- I focus my interest on structure and function of lotic macroinvertebrate communities. The differences observed between invertebrate populations living on substrata of different size with various alimentary resources and exposed to different flow regimes are the object of researches. The benthic macroinvertebrate communities of regulated and non-regulated running water ecosystems in Northern Italy were examined to evaluate the effect of “pulse” discharges on the composition, distribution, density and biomass of populations. The buffer and wild quality of the riparian areas are evaluated by many environmental landscape indices to understand the relations between the state of fluvial corridors and the quality and the process of lotic biotic components. Besides, I study the macroinvertebrate role on decomposition leaves rate: the relationships between leaf litter diversity and the functional role of invertebrates are investigated in Appennine small streams. All the researches are financed by Adige, Marecchia and Reno Basin Authorities and by Ministry of University.
