Research in progress :
- The Lusitanic-Mediterranean region exhibits some faunistic peculiarities due to taxa whose evolution and biological features are strictly related to the geological and environmental history of the region. The study of the differentiation of morphological, reproductive and molecular genetic traits of some target taxa in relation to their geographic distibution, to their different habitats, and to environmental parameters can provide useful information both to understand the processes and evolutionary forces which produced the present differentiation and variability of characters, and to describe biodiversity. The acquired data set will constitute an important tool to define the population parameters which are necessary to manage and preserve natural resources, and to establish guidelines for the conservation and biological protection of these taxa. Moreover, the results will be useful to understand the evolutionary processes which have led to the present-day diversity.Specific goals are the analysis: - of the biological and reproductive cycles of populations of Adriatic demersal and pelagic Teleosteans; - of the variability of morphometric and meristic characters of populations and species of Mediterranean molluscs and fishes; - of the intra- and sub-specific genetic diversity of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA loci in Molluscs, Decapod Crustacea, Elasmobranchs and Teleosts; - of the gut content in some fish species in order to define trophic chains.
