BACKGROUND
Apart from its application in human diagnostics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also be used to study the internal anatomy of zoological specimens. As a non-invasive imaging technique, MRI has several advantages, such as fast acquisition of data, output the correct three-dimensional image, and the provision of appropriate digital data from the beginning of the study. It is important for the study of comparative zoology is the capacity of MRI to perform high-throughput analysis of multiple specimens. In this study, MRI was applied to systematically document the internal anatomy of 98 species representative of urchins (Echinodermata: Echinoidea).
RESULTS
raw and derived datasets including image data of 141 MRI scans. Most whole sea urchin specimens analyzed was obtained from museum collections. achieve scan resolution to allow differentiation of various organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, the reproductive system, coelomic compartment, and muscle lanterns. All data is stored in the repository can be accessed GigaDB using open source software. the potential uses of datasets including interactive exploration of the sea urchin anatomy, morphometric and volumetric analysis of the internal organs were observed in their natural context, as well as the correlation of hard and soft tissue structures.
CONCLUSION
This dataset includes broad taxonomic and morphological spectrum of Echinoidea, focusing on the sea ‘ordinary’ hedgehog taxa. Files stored to significantly expand the number of morphological data on Echinoidea that are electronically available. The approach chosen here can be extended to various other vertebrate and invertebrate taxa. We found the anatomy and morphology of data are publicly available digital collected during the experiment involving a non-invasive imaging technique is one of the prerequisites for future large scale genotype-phenotype correlation.
